Praising the Work of Robert Sigmond on KOSB

  • Submitted by: Finlay Carson, Galloway and West Dumfries, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 03 October 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14775

That the Parliament recognises the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem, when 760 officers and men of the 7th Battalion (Galloway) Kings Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) (Airborne) became the first troops to land in the Netherlands and were instantly involved in combat; notes that, at the end of the operation, only 76 men made it back across the River Rhine to allied lines, and that the rest were either killed or taken prisoner by the Nazis; acknowledges that one of the individuals, Lance Corporal John Pringle, was sadly killed in action on 21 September 1944 at the Dreyeroord Hotel, during the defence of Oosterbeek Perimeter, at what became known as “the Battle of the White House”; understands that the officer is buried alongside 1,770 of his brothers in arms at the Commonwealth War Graves Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek; praises the work of historian and writer, Robert Sigmond, who has written various papers and books on the KOSB; believes that he has also provided valuable information on the fallen heroes, their movements during the battles, their deaths, field burial and re-burial, and that his dedication and undying commitment has helped many others learn about their loved ones, and appreciates what it sees as the unstinting work carried out by Robert.
