  • Date lodged: Thursday, 11 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13878

That the Parliament congratulates environmentally aware pupils at Killermont Primary School in Bearsden on taking a top prize in Keep Scotland Beautiful’s 2024 Pocket Garden Design Competition, in partnership with the Garden for Life Forum; understands that nursery and school pupils, aged from three to 18, were invited to design a miniature garden, inspired by nature’s engineers, such as birds, beavers or bees, which includes food for people, is good for wildlife and reuses something; applauds Killermont Primary School’s project to divert rainwater to its new wetland garden, which pays homage to beavers as masters of engineering and features its own beaver dam that doubles as a home for insects; notes that it was named most successful transformation from design to real garden in the Wildlife Gardening theme section; understands that the 2024 contest received more than 100 entries across 19 local authority areas; further understands that the Pocket Garden Design Competition aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal Four, Learning for Sustainability, and is run as part of the Climate Action Schools framework, and commends the annual project for giving pupils and educators a creative focus for learning to support sustainability, STEM skills and the Curriculum for Excellence, while learning more about the climate and nature emergencies, and having fun learning outdoors.
