Welsh Parliament Declares Nature Emergency

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 05 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00589

That the Parliament welcomes the Welsh Parliament’s declaration of a nature emergency; understands that it is the first parliament in the world to declare a nature emergency; recognises the findings of the report, State of Nature 2019, which found that one in nine Scottish species were at risk of extinction, with 49% of species decreasing in abundance since 1970; welcomes the Welsh Parliament’s support for legally binding targets to be introduced to halt nature loss and put it on a path to recovery, and considers the declaration of a nature emergency and introduction of binding nature recovery targets to be essential to achieve the ambitions set out in Scotland’s Environment Strategy and the Scottish Government’s Statement of Intent on Biodiversity.
