Transparency of Scottish Conservative Party Donations

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 12 June 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-06055

That the Parliament expresses concern at revelations on the Open Democracy website regarding a reported £100,000 donation made in April 2016 by the Irvine Unionist Club to the North Ayrshire Conservative and Unionist Association; understands that the Irvine Unionist Club was declared to be an unincorporated association but was not registered, which is a legal requirement for an unincorporated association donating over £25,000, and that, despite having been registered as going to the party association in North Ayrshire, the local treasurer has reportedly claimed that most of the money went to the central party in Edinburgh; calls on the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party to reveal where the money for the donation came from and whether it knew that the donor was reportedly not registered, and calls on the UK Government to reform the political donation reporting system to ensure that the source of large donations is always completely transparent and that the Electoral Commission checks the status of every large donor.
