Recognising Scottish Football Pioneer, Edna Neillis

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 12 August 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-13934

That the Parliament notes with sadness the passing of the former Scotland women’s international footballer, Edna Neillis; recognises Ms Neillis’ role as a pioneer of Scottish sport, having played in the first official women’s international match against England at Greenock in 1972, before deciding to play professionally abroad with what is considered a highly successful spell at AC Milan; deeply regrets that women’s football was banned from league grounds by the SFA and FA for half a century prior to 1972, apparently having decided that the sport had become too popular after the First World War, and supports calls for Ms Neillis’ legacy to be honoured by her induction into the Football Hall of Fame.
