  • Submitted by: Rachael Hamilton, Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 01 April 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16981

That the Parliament recognises the reported significant community support for the reopening of Laidlaw Memorial Pool in Jedburgh, as demonstrated by the estimated 600 to 1,000 people who attended the public meeting on 24 March 2025; acknowledges what it sees as the strong solidarity shown by the local community, elected representatives and key stakeholders, including, it understands, the backing of Rachael Hamilton MSP, John Lamont MP, members of Scottish Borders Council, and the Jedburgh Community Council; notes the ongoing process undertaken by Scottish Borders Council to assess the viability of reopening the pool, which is still underway, including a full audit of sports facilities and the forthcoming publication of a report into its future; understands that the pool has been an important facility for generations, providing opportunities for swimming, water safety and sporting development in the Borders; appreciates the reported concerns raised by local residents regarding the closure of the pool, the financial challenges involved, and the need for long-term sustainability; welcomes the efforts of all involved in exploring the potential reopening or redevelopment of a swimming facility in Jedburgh, and calls on all relevant authorities to engage with the community to ensure that Jedburgh has access to essential swimming and sporting facilities for years to come, particularly in light of the Scottish swimming bodies' campaign, Support School Swimming.
