Heathrow Airport

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Independent.

That the Parliament notes the major disruption caused by a fire at the substation supplying Heathrow Airport, which resulted in widespread flight cancellations due to the loss of power on 21 March 2025; believes that this incident highlights the risks of over centralising the UK’s aviation infrastructure around a single hub or airport; notes reports that the UK Government continues to promote the expansion of Heathrow, including a third runway, as a benefit to Scotland, but considers that this approach only reinforces reliance on one airport; considers that investment in direct flights from airports across Scotland to overseas destinations, would provide greater resilience, connectivity, and economic benefits, and hopes that the UK Government and Scottish Government prioritise improvements to aviation infrastructure across the country rather than focusing solely on Heathrow.
