Remembering Jake the Cat, William Shearer's Shop, Orkney

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 25 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16895

That the Parliament notes with deep sadness the passing of Jake, the much-beloved cat residing at William Shearer’s shop in Kirkwall, Orkney, at the age of 18; understands that Jake was a well-known and popular fixture at the shop and welcomed countless customers over the years; recognises that many in the local community in Orkney and beyond recount fond memories of the affection and mischief Jake so often displayed; understands that Jake could often be found curled up and taking a nap in various corners of the shop, but was always amenable to the attention of customers of all ages; further understands that visitors returning to the islands would often make the journey to Shearer’s in the hope of an encounter with Jake; believes that Jake will be sorely missed; offers its condolences to all those at William Shearer’s at this sad time, and pays tribute to the life of Jake, who was quite possibly the best-loved feline in Orkney.
