Congratulations to Professor Gerald Lip

  • Submitted by: Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 25 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16871

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Gerald Lip on his appointment to the post of Lead for Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice at the University of Aberdeen; understands that this post, which will involve teaching medical students and clinicians the basic principles of AI and how it can be implemented to clinical practice, is the first example of a medical school in Scotland appointing a head of AI in medicine; further understands that Professor Lip is a widely recognised expert in the field of AI in healthcare, with experience of many large-scale clinical trials, including the GEMINI project, where AI was used to detect an additional 12% more cancers than in routine practice; believes that this move highlights the important role that AI is playing in modern medicine and how it will help to equip future doctors with the knowledge and skills required to harness AI technologies in providing more accurate diagnoses, personalised treatments and proactive patient care; wishes Professor Lip all the very best in this new role, and hopes that the University of Aberdeen continues to be at the forefront of education and research in healthcare.
