Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust Celebrates 175th Anniversary of the First Railway Reaching Aberdeen

  • Submitted by: Liam Kerr, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 20 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16863

That the Parliament congratulates the Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust on marking the 175th anniversary of the first railway reaching Aberdeen; notes that the Aberdeen Railway Company constructed the initial section of the Ferryhill Engine Shed in Aberdeen prior to the opening of its railway from the south in April 1850; further notes that the shed remained in operation under successive ownership by the Scottish North Eastern, Caledonian and LMS railways, until its closure by British Rail in 1987; understands that the Heritage Trust, which was established in 2007, took over the surviving buildings, wagon repair shops and water tower of the former Ferryhill locomotive depot and transformed these into a fully operational railway heritage site serving the north east; further understands that it promotes skills and awareness, with activities including the restoration of the turntable, and extends its best wishes to all of the volunteers for their continued success in preserving and promoting this historic legacy.
