Support for Stella Maris

  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16838

That the Parliament notes with concern the treatment and dismissal of Stella Maris as the rector of University of St Andrews, following her public letter calling for a ceasefire in Palestine; understands that this letter was published from the independent office of the rector to, and on behalf of, students at the university; recognises that rector is an independent role in the university court and is elected by the student body; believes that this gives the role holder significant scope to make statements on global issues on behalf of the students; understands that, since Ms Maris’ dismissal, several open letters signed by the students and the international community calling for her reinstatement have been published, believes that Ms Maris has not received adequate support from the university and has felt unsafe due to the heightened media coverage of her dismissal, and supports the calls for her reinstatement as chair of the university court.
