International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 14 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16788

That the Parliament notes that 21 March 2025 marks the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination; considers that the recommendations made by the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination specifically for the Scottish Government must be implemented immediately to support Black and minority ethnic people facing racial inequality and racism in Scotland; commends the efforts of the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights, Dundee International Women’s Centre, Grampian Region Equality Council and other third sector organisations, whose work directly addresses racial disparities across different areas of life and tackles systemic racism; recognises that these structural inequalities create worse outcomes for Black and minority ethnic people who are, it understands, twice as likely to experience poverty than White Scottish/British people, and urges the Scottish Government to ensure that structural racial inequality is properly understood by, and addressed across, all public sector agencies.
