Energy Price Cap and Energy Debt

  • Submitted by: Christine Grahame, Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 11 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16592

The Parliament notes that the UK energy price cap is to rise by 6.4% in April 2025, which reportedly equates to an average annual rise of £281 per household, representing, it believes, a further burden on households in Scotland; notes recent figures from Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS), which shows that as of February 2025, almost one in every five people visiting CAS received energy advice; further notes that, according to the report, CAS has supported more than 9,000 people across Scotland with their energy needs, with those people seeking advice having an average energy debt of £2,500, which is an 8% increase from the previous year, with the average energy debt in rural Scotland, specifically, even higher at more than £3,100; understands that two in every five people who asked for energy advice needed other support, with more than half requiring advice on social security; believes that this paints a concerning picture of people struggling to meet the costs of energy, and thanks all at CAS for all the support they have provided and will be required to provide in the light of this further increase.
