That the Parliament congratulates agricultural journalist Eddie Gillanders MBE for receiving the National Farmers Union (NFU) Scotland and NFU Mutual’s Ambassador Award at the NFU Scotland Annual Dinner in Glasgow; recognises that Eddie received the award to honour his near-60 years of reporting on Scottish agriculture, and ensuring the achievements and stories of the sector were seen by a wider audience; understands that Eddie began his career in journalism as an assistant agricultural editor at the Press and Journal (P&J) in 1964, and after returning to that newspaper, he embarked on a 20-year tenure as its agricultural editor, which included creating the P&J’s weekly farming supplement; considers that Eddie used his media and communications experience over the years to benefit the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, Aberdeen and Northern Marts, North East Farmers’ Co-operative and the Royal Northern Agricultural Society, and that he has won numerous awards for his journalism, including the prestigious British Guild of Agricultural Journalists Netherthorpe Award in 1982; understands that, alongside his wife Marion, he published the independent farming magazines, Agri-Business Scotland and Farm North East; acknowledges what it sees as the high regard held for Eddie across the political spectrum as well as from all involved in Scotland’s agricultural sector, and wishes Eddie well in his retirement.
