Lloyds Banking Group Closing 14 Local Bank of Scotland Branches

  • Submitted by: Stephanie Callaghan, Uddingston and Bellshill, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 10 February 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16362

That the Parliament notes with concern the decision of the Lloyds Banking Group to close 14 Bank of Scotland branches across Scotland between May 2025 and March 2026, including the Uddingston Branch; further notes that this is the latest in a series of bank closures across the Uddingston and Bellshill constituency; understands that many people have had to rely on public transport to access vital financial services; considers that these closures will have a significant impact on local residents and businesses that depend on high street banks for cash access and essential banking services, particularly affecting older people, disabled people and small businesses; believes that, in the context of rising living costs and increasingly intelligent banking scams, communities rely on accessible financial support and secure in-person banking services; further believes that there is a risk for high streets to become banking "ghost towns" and that banks have a duty to support, rather than abandon, the communities they serve; considers that, while banking increasingly moves online, financial institutions must ensure that vulnerable customers and those unable to bank digitally have access to safe, secure services, as well as to financial advice and support; expresses further concern over the reported growing reliance on post offices as an alternative to banks; understands that local post offices are already under significant pressure and that they are themselves closing at an increasing rate; expresses disappointment with what it sees as the lack of clarity on how the banking needs will be met for people living in poverty, disabled people, older people, and those with limited access to public transport, and urges the Lloyds Banking Group to reconsider its decision.
