That the Parliament celebrates the success of the 2024 Orkney Sports Awards, held at the Orkney Theatre on 31 January 2025; understands that these awards provide an opportunity to recognise and celebrate sporting achievements and those who help provide a platform for local athletes to compete; notes, in particular, that the Orkney Junior Inter-County swimming team won Performance of the Year for its historic display in beating Shetland in June 2024, for the first time since 1997; congratulates Gemma Reid and Deborah Pepper for their joint success as School Sports Volunteer of the Year, as well as Jessica Bruce and Pete Bentley, who won the Young Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year awards for their work with the kayak club and cyclo-cross, respectively; welcomes the continued success of Orkney’s female rugby community, with Tiphaine Cazenave and Jo Inkster being awarded Coach and Official of the Year, respectively; congratulates the Kirkwall Grammar School netballers and the Orkney Squash Club on triumphing in the Young Team and Team of the Year categories; believes that the induction of Nigel Thomson into the Orkney Sporting Hall of Fame was a popular and well-deserved acknowledgment of Nigel’s remarkable achievements in athletics, in which he remains the Orkney record holder at 200m, as well as his phenomenal track record coaching new generations of Orkney athletes; welcomes Ken Amer’s Service to Sport Award for his 40-year career capturing and immortalising Orkney sport on camera, as well as his one cap for Orkney RFC 1st XV; commends Emily McArthur on winning Young Sports Person of the Year, after an outstanding run of achievements, including representing Scotland in the 800m at the U17 International Summer Schools Meet and securing silver at the Scottish Schools Championships; further commends this year’s Sports Person of the Year, Claire Rendall, who had a remarkable year competing at the World Ironman Championships in Nice, where she finished as the runner-up in her age group; pays tribute to all the athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials who were nominated and shortlisted and who reflect what it sees as the incredible scale of Orkney sporting talent, and wishes them all continued success, especially looking ahead to the 2025 International Island Games, which will be held in Orkney in July.
