Consent for Rosebank Oil Field Ruled Unlawful

  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 12 February 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16303

That the Parliament welcomes the decision by the Court of Session that has deemed that consent for the Rosebank oil field, and the smaller Jackdaw gas field, was granted unlawfully; understands that this ruling was based on a failure to consider the carbon emissions that would be created by burning any oil and gas produced; further understands that Rosebank would have reportedly caused emissions equal to the 28 lowest income countries combined; congratulates the campaigners who, it believes, have worked tirelessly to oppose the approval of these new fossil fuel licences; considers that this ruling is an important step towards achieving net zero commitments and addressing what it sees as climate chaos, and calls on the Scottish Government to invest in Scotland’s renewable energy potential, and maintain its reported position of a presumption against new oil and gas developments.
