Welcoming the Nick Sheridan Memorial Bursary Scheme

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 21 January 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16163

That the Parliament welcomes the establishment of the Nick Sheridan Memorial Bursary, in honour of journalist and author Nick Sheridan, who died in 2024; believes that this is a fitting tribute to the extraordinarily talented broadcaster and writer, who inspired and supported young journalists throughout his distinguished career, including as a part-time lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS); congratulates BBC Scotland, STV and UWS for jointly creating, funding and overseeing the student bursary scheme, which will award £1,500 to the successful applicant plus a week’s paid work experience at both BBC Scotland and STV after graduation from either the BA (Hons) Television, Radio and Podcast Production course or the BA (Hons) Journalism/Sports Journalism course at UWS; understands that the first bursary is due to be awarded at the start of the next academic year, in autumn 2025; acknowledges that, prior to joining BBC Scotland, Nick, who was originally from Wexford in Ireland, had worked in broadcasting for more than a decade, spanning roles with RTE News and STV, before presenting several BBC Scotland news and radio programmes, including Reporting Scotland, Drivetime, the Nine and Seven Days, and believes that Nick’s legacy goes far beyond his work and professional achievements, and that his generosity, kindness and humour will continue to inspire and influence his loved ones and peers, and inspire journalists for many years to come.
