  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 21 January 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16150

That the Parliament recognises the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which was adopted by the UN in 2017, currently has 94 signatories and has been ratified by 73 states; notes that the third meeting of member state parties (3MSP), which aims to further promote nuclear non-proliferation, will take place at the UN headquarters in New York in March 2025; understands that the full Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will take place in New York in May 2025; further understands that, as a state party to the NPT, the UK is bound by article 6, which states that parties to the NPT must "pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament", and calls on the UK Government to attend the 3MSP in an observer capacity and uphold its commitment to the NPT, particularly with regard to article 6.
