That the Parliament welcomes the National Lottery Heritage Fund awarding £437,046 to the Royal High School Preservation Trust to take forward plans to transform the former Royal High School on Calton Hill, Edinburgh, into a new National Centre for Music; understands that the National Lottery Heritage Fund has also ringfenced a further £4.5 million for the project, which, if completed, would include the biggest public garden created in Edinburgh for 200 years; agrees with the project’s ambition to create a “national beacon for music”; recognises the architectural importance of the former Royal High School, which was designed by Thomas Hamilton in a neoclassical style and completed in 1829, and was later category A-listed; believes that Scotland’s architectural and cultural heritage should be preserved, and hopes that the Royal High School Preservation Trust is successful in bringing the building back into use as a cultural hub that is open to the public as much as possible.
