Dollar Academy to Host an Overnight Stop for Doddie's Grand Tour

  • Submitted by: Alexander Stewart, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 14 January 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16098

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Dollar Academy is to host an overnight stop on 6 February 2025 for more than 100 cyclists during the event named Doddie’s Grand Tour, which is a 700-mile trip around Scotland, raising funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation; understands that this stage in the event has been made particularly poignant following the recent, tragic death of former Dollar Academy pupil, Scott Stewart, who died from motor neuron disease (MND) on 22 December 2024, leaving behind his wife and baby daughter; further understands that following on from the success of the All Roads Lead to Rome ride earlier in 2024, former Scotland Rugby Captain and Lion, Rob Wainwright, is bringing his annual cycling fundraiser closer to home for 2025; notes that the tour’s goal is to complete the 700-mile route in four days, finishing in Edinburgh, to deliver the match ball for the Scotland vs Ireland Six Nations fixture on 9 February 2025; understands that the overnight stop in Dollar will see food generously provided by the school’s caterer, Thomas Franks, in support of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, whilst the riders are set to be looked after by volunteers from a number of community organisations, including Hillfoots Rugby Club and Dollar Accies Rugby Club; notes that it is also hoped that the stop will also allow community organisations to do their own fundraising in advance of the riders arriving and, in addition to all this, Dollar will have its own team taking part in the Grand Tour, and commends Dollar Academy, Thomas Franks, the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, Rob Wainwright and his teams, as well as everyone involved on their extremely magnanimous endeavours.
