Celebrating Five Sisters Zoo's Successful Translocation of its 200th Beaver

  • Submitted by: Lorna Slater, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 14 January 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16079

That the Parliament recognises the remarkable milestone of Five Sisters Zoo (FSZ), in partnership with Beaver Trust, on translocating its 200th beaver; notes the hard work of FSZ and Beaver Trust in their efforts to ensure the successful continuation of essential restoration projects for beavers; understands that, since 2019, this partnership has facilitated the movement of beavers from conflict zones to enclosed projects in England and Wales, and wild release sites in Scotland; considers that the reintroduction of this keystone species has been a high-profile conservation success; believes that beavers are one of nature’s ecological engineers as their building of dams and habitat maintenance can ameliorate flooding and improve water quality, as well as prevent soil sediments and pollutants from flowing downstream; congratulates FSZ on its nomination for a Great British Wildlife Restoration Award due to this work, and wishes FSZ continued success in its endeavours with the beaver restoration works.
