That the Parliament congratulates three inspiring Orcadians, Marty Flett, Kenneth Gee and Tom Muir, on being recognised in The King’s New Year Honours list by being appointed MBEs; understands that Marty, who attended the recent Scottish Parliament 25th anniversary event as Orkney’s “local hero”, has been appointed in acknowledgement of his remarkable fundraising efforts on behalf of Clan Cancer Support, which is a charity providing invaluable support to people in Orkney, Shetland and the north east affected by cancer; notes that Kenneth's MBE appointment is in recognition of his contribution to maritime safety and the protection of the Orkney community through his lifesaving work with the Kirkwall RNLI for almost 24 years; welcomes the MBE for Tom Muir in recognition of his work over 36 years as the exhibitions and engagement officer at Orkney Museum, in which capacity he has raised the profile of Orcadian folk tales with the publication of books, such as The Mermaid Bride and Other Orkney Folk Tales, alongside his important work with the Orkney Storytelling Festival, which aims to help preserve Orkney’s vibrant cultural legacy and folktales for generations to come; believes that these honours are richly deserved and a fitting tribute to the dedication of Marty, Kenneth and Tom to serving the Orkney community in a wide variety of ways; thanks all three for the contributions that they have made and continue to make, and wishes them all the best for the future.
