Acknowledging Nihon Hidankyo, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2024

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-15784

That the Parliament understands that the Nobel Committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 to Nihon Hidankyo, the Japanese grassroots organisation of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, who are also known as Hibakusha; acknowledges that Hibakusha have worked tirelessly for decades to raise awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons use; recognises what it sees as the ongoing relevance of their message in a world where, it believes, the threat of nuclear weapons remains a pressing concern; believes that nuclear disarmament is a crucial step towards ensuring global peace and security, and that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) offers a vital framework for achieving a world free of nuclear weapons, and encourages governments to take concrete steps to honour this award, including enhanced engagement with the TPNW, participation in international disarmament efforts, and collaboration with civil society to advance the cause of nuclear abolition.
