  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 25 October 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-15034

That the Parliament congratulates the primary and secondary pupils of Whalsay School, Shetland, on the success of their fish and chip fundraiser for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) on 27 September 2024, which raised £2,740 to be split between the Lerwick and Aith lifeboat stations in Shetland and the national RNLI charity; understands that the fundraiser was organised to celebrate the RNLI’s 200th anniversary and showcase the results of pupils’ learning about the organisation; further understands that each age group undertook projects on different aspects of the RNLI and its history, including primary pupils creating stories about lifesaving, learning about the different classes of lifeboat and learning about the role of the RNLI in the Second World War, and secondary school pupils making models of lifeboats in art, learning about the technological developments in the RNLI and learning about the history of the RNLI in Shetland; celebrates the generosity of Whalsay skippers and their crews, who supplied haddocks and donations for supplies after receiving letters from the Primary Pupil Council asking for support; celebrates the efforts of the school management team and staff, the canteen cooks, parent council and wider community in supporting the fundraiser; notes what it sees as the importance of the RNLI to island communities such as Whalsay, which has a strong fishing community and long seafaring history; considers it important that school pupils learn about safety at sea; believes that the pupils' donations will help the RNLI continue its vital work to save lives at sea; commends all the pupils at Whalsay School for their hard work on the learning projects and fundraiser, and wishes them success in their future endeavours.
