  • Date lodged: Friday, 25 October 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-15033

That the Parliament congratulates Shaqayeq Nejah on being named Moray College UHI Student of the Year 2024; notes that Shaqayeq was forced to flee the Taliban from her homeland of Afghanistan and fled to Iran, after the rulers decreed that no female over the age of 11 could undertake any form of education; understands that Shaqayeq eventually secured a visa to travel to the UK where she joined her husband, who was already here and was working as a doctor in Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin; further understands that Shaqayeq then enrolled at Moray College UHI to study English and, while there, she helped other refugee students by acting as an interpreter; notes that Shaqayeq volunteered in her spare time at Dr Gray’s Hospital in the Administration Department and then enrolled in another course at Moray College related to Applied Science, with her ambition to qualify as a radiographer; praises Shaqayeq on winning the title Student of the Year because of her diligence and work ethic, her focus on her studies and her positive and enthusiastic attitude, and wishes Shaqayeq well for the future.
