That the Parliament welcomes the recent report from Nourish Scotland on public diners, a state-supported initiative designed to provide affordable, nutritious meals to the general public as part of Scotland’s social infrastructure; recognises that, akin to libraries and public parks, public diners ensure access to good food for all, regardless of socioeconomic status, and that these establishments would promote inclusivity by offering healthy meals in a dignified environment without stigma, as happened during the Second World War, when they were known as British Restaurants; notes what it sees as the key benefits of public diners in addressing critical issues, such as public health, food insecurity and climate change, by making nutritious food accessible and reducing reliance on processed foods; considers that public diners would contribute to Scotland’s climate goals by sourcing locally and sustainably, while also reducing household food waste; recognises what it sees as the cultural and social value of public diners in strengthening community ties and providing a vital space for social cohesion, and believes that public diners should be considered, given what it considers to be their potential to promote healthier eating habits, safeguard the right to food and contribute to a more sustainable food system for Scotland.
