UN International Day against Nuclear Tests

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 02 September 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14264

That the Parliament recognises that 29 August 2024 marked the UN International Day against Nuclear Tests; believes that this was instated in 2009 to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan on 29 August 1991; understands that, from 1949 to 1989, an estimated 456 Soviet nuclear tests were carried out at the Semipalatinsk test site, and that approximately 1.5 million people in the surrounding area have been left with genetic damage, and notes that survivors of nuclear explosions and testing from Japan, South Korea and the Marshall Islands, as well as military veteran test victims, will gather in Semipalatinsk to commemorate all those lost due to such explosions and tests, and to demand an end to nuclear weapons across the world.
