Congratulating the Uist Virtual Archaeology Project on Boosting Archaeology Tourism in the Outer Hebrides

  • Submitted by: Emma Roddick, Highlands and Islands, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 05 August 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14004

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the role of the Uist Unearthed app in boosting archaeology tourism across the Outer Hebrides; notes that the app was developed by the award-winning Uist Virtual Archaeology Project, which is led by the archaeology team from UHI North, West and Hebrides in partnership with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar; understands that the app, which uses a GPS map to highlight and promote heritage sites and visitor attractions, has been downloaded over 6,500 times since its launch in 2021; further understands that 90% of app respondents said that they had learnt something new about the islands’ archaeology and that 96% agreed that the project had provided more things to see and do for visitors; celebrates the news that visitors to archaeological sites across the Outer Hebrides have more than doubled since 2017, and wishes the team all the best as they seek to extend their approach and thinking to develop similar heritage interpretation for archaeological sites across neighbouring Hebridean islands.
