Freedom of North Lanarkshire Awarded to the Royal Regiment of Scotland

  • Submitted by: Clare Adamson, Motherwell and Wishaw, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 15 July 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13889

That the Parliament congratulates the Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) on receiving the Freedom of North Lanarkshire on 23 July 2024; notes that soldiers from the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS), accompanied by the 2 SCOTS Pipes and Drums, the band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, were led by the regimental Shetland pony mascot, Corporal Cruachan IV, as they marched through Motherwell to mark the "homecoming" for 2 SCOTS, following recent operations in the Middle East; understands that the links between North Lanarkshire and the Regiment can be traced back to 1678 through the Royal Scots Fusiliers, which traditionally recruited soldiers from North Lanarkshire and continued to do so upon its amalgamation with the Highland Light Infantry to form the Royal Highland Fusiliers; acknowledges that the Freedom was awarded to the SCOTS for its outstanding service to the country, and thanks the Regiment for what it sees as its invaluable contribution to the nation.
