That the Parliament marks World Drowning Prevention Day 2024, which takes place on 25 July; notes that, through Resolution A/RES/75/273 of the UN General Assembly on Global drowning prevention in April 2021, this global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offers life-saving solutions to prevent death by drowning; understands that an estimated 236,000 people drown every year, and that drowning is among the 10 leading causes of death for children aged from five to 14, with more than 90% of drowning deaths occurring in rivers, lochs, wells, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected; considers that the initiative is critical in raising awareness and encouraging the public to enjoy water safely; further considers that with the right water safety education, such as knowledge of the water safety code, accidental drownings are preventable; welcomes the provision of educational resources by Water Safety Scotland, created by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), which include free water safety lessons for schools and practitioners and the first ever curriculum-aligned water safety resources; commends the Royal Life Saving Society UK and partner agencies, such as Water Safety Scotland, for their tireless advocacy for improved water safety, and encourages members of the public to use the resources produced; commends Water Safety Scotland, alongside Scottish Water, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the Darcey Sunshine Foundation and RoSPA, for hosting the third annual Water Safety Open Day on 25 July 2024 on the shores of Loch Lomond, in support of World Drowning Prevention Day, and encourages everyone to come along.
