Young Citizen Recognition for Shopping Week Chair

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 17 June 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13651

That the Parliament congratulates Savannah Taylor, from Stromness, on being awarded the Rotary Club’s Young Citizen Award for her outstanding work contributing to Stromness’ annual Shopping Week over several years; recognises that Savannah has been leading the event since 2019, aged 18, first as vice-chair and then as chair of the organisation committee; notes that Shopping Week is the longest-running festival in Orkney, having been established in 1949 as an opportunity to attract shoppers to the town centre; understands that the modern festival offers a platform for Stromnessians to celebrate the town, including through displays of art and music, and culminates in the Fancy Dress Parade and spectacular fireworks display on the final Saturday night; commends Savannah and everyone else on the organisation committee for their hard work and dedication to their community, and looks forward to many more Shopping Weeks to come.
