Frances Aitken, Winner of the Mental Health Nursing Award

That the Parliament notes that Frances Aitken, the lead dementia nurse for Stress and Distress at St John's Hospital, was announced as the winner of the Mental Health Nursing Award; recognises Frances’s work to improve care experience for patients with cognitive decline in St John’s Hospital's acute setting by reducing stress and distress, emergency psychiatric interventions and over-medication with sedatives; notes that Frances led awareness-raising and training for the implementation of the Stress and Distress programme, with the evaluation showing positive outcomes, including reduced need for one-to-one nursing, sedation and emergency calls, along with improved pain management and decreased complaints; recognises Frances’s work to enhance patient experience, increased partnership with families and improved staff knowledge, and congratulates Frances on what it sees as this well-deserved award.
