Cargo Bike Movement

  • Submitted by: Lorna Slater, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-13545

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the inspirational work of the charity, Cargo Bike Movement, which is based in central Edinburgh; commends the staff and volunteers who, with their cargo bikes, collect surplus food from supermarkets and distribute it to those being accommodated in local hotels, shelters and hostels; understands that the charity also provides cargo bikes to communities, businesses and individuals as an active and sustainable alternative to car and van journeys within the low emission zones, to help promote fairer, greener and healthier communities and to free up space on the roads so that people can choose to travel in an active and conscientious manner; further understands that the charity has explored all available funding options and is at risk of ceasing trading, and urges the Scottish Government to identify funding through the Community Project Transition Fund, or by other means, to allow what it considers to be this much-needed local project to continue its work, which it believes aligns with the outcomes and objectives of the Active Travel Framework.
