Orcadian Reporter Named Scotland’s Young Journalist of the Year

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 07 June 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13540

That the Parliament congratulates Ethan Flett, reporter at The Orcadian newspaper, on being awarded Scotland’s Young Journalist of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards 2024; understands that Ethan was one of five young journalists from across Scotland shortlisted for this award; recognises that judges for the award highlighted his careful reporting on often sensitive issues, including accusations of workplace bullying within Orkney Islands Council’s social work department and the impact of air service disruption on hospital patients; further recognises his dedicated reporting on what it sees as a range of key local issues, not least the lifeline transport links between the islands and with mainland Scotland; understands that Ethan has also established the popular off-beat feature, Ethan’s Cabinet of Curiosities, which delves into mysteries and quirky characters from Orkney’s past; notes that this award marks Ethan’s third year at The Orcadian, and in journalism, before which point he had "never written a news story in [his] life"; acknowledges that The Orcadian was also shortlisted in the category of Weekly Newsbrand of the Year at the 2024 Press Awards for the second year running, having won in this category in 2023; commends Ethan and all the nominees for Young Journalist of the Year for their hard work and achievements; celebrates the strength of local journalism in Scotland’s rural and island areas, and wishes Scotland’s young journalists all the best for their careers ahead.
