Scottish Mountain Rescue in 2023

  • Submitted by: Liz Smith, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 15 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13214

That the Parliament gives its appreciation to the work of the Scottish Mountain Rescue following the publication of its annual 2023 Statistics Report; understands that the volunteers of the service clocked up 32,762 hours over the course of 2023, responding to 572 independent incidents and assisting 677 individuals, with callouts occurring on 278 days of the year; recognises what it sees as the extraordinary effort of rescue teams and Police Scotland following another intense year of incidents, unfortunately involving 41 fatalities across Scotland, which, it believes, matches the trend of ever-increasing total callouts each year, and expresses the need for increasing awareness of the dangers associated with the Scottish Mountains and outdoor sports in order to bring down the numbers of annual callouts and relieve the pressure on life-saving volunteers.
