The Passing of George Marwick

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 06 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10338

That the Parliament notes with sadness the passing of George Marwick CVO at the age of 91; pays tribute to Mr Marwick's long and distinguished career of public service in Orkney; understands that Mr Marwick was elected to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) in the very first set of elections in 1974, and was the first convener of the new council; recognises the key role that Mr Marwick played in the first years of OIC's existence; further understands that, after being made a Deputy Lieutenant in 1976 and then Vice Lord-Lieutenant in 1995, Mr Marwick became Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney in 1997 and served for 10 years; believes that Mr Marwick was one of only two people to have served as both convener and Lord-Lieutenant in Orkney, an impressive symbol of his commitment to the county; offers thanks for Mr Marwick’s years of service to the Orkney community, and extends sincere condolences to his wife, Norma, and daughters Anne, Kareen and Ingrid.
