Myeloproliferative Neoplasm Research Funding

  • Submitted by: Kevin Stewart, Aberdeen Central, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 01 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10268

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Aberdeen and Queen's University Belfast on securing £280,000 of funding from Blood Cancer UK to research myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN); understands that Aberdeen's Professor Lesley Anderson and her team plan to look at data and samples from people with MPN to identify small changes in DNA that might be responsible for causing the disease, and also hope to combine this work with looking at other environmental factors such as where people live, what job they do and other factors, as these things can reportedly "turn on" and "turn off" genes and can influence the chance of individuals developing some cancers; recognises that Blood Cancer UK is funding £25 million of research across 65 research project institutions across the UK, and wishes the University of Aberdeen, Queen's University Belfast and Blood Cancer UK all the best with their research endeavours.
