Report of the Independent Review on the Economics of Biodiversity

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 25 February 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24237

That the Parliament recognises the publication of the Final Report of the Independent Review on the Economics of Biodiversity, which was led by Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta; believes this independent, global review presents the first comprehensive economic framework of its kind for biodiversity; understands that biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history and that current extinction rates are around 100 to 1,000 times higher than the baseline rate and increasing; believes that the report demonstrates how economies, livelihoods and wellbeing depend on everyone's most precious asset, nature, and that the current unsustainable relationship with the natural world endangers wildlife and human existence and prosperity; considers that the transformative change proposed by the report is a necessary response to the interlinked crises facing biodiversity and the climate, and believes that reversing what it sees as these devastating trends requires concerted action now.
