To ask the Scottish Government what support it is offering to the employees of the Remploy factory in Netherton following the announcement that the factory is to close.

Through our Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE) initiative, we are working very closely with the Department of Work and Pensions to deliver a package of support which will be specially tailored to meet the needs of employees facing redundancy at the Remploy Netherton factory.

A Disability Employment Adviser will be appointed as a Personal Case Worker to provide support to each individual employee. The package of support is due to begin during week commencing Monday 30 July and will last for a period of up to 18 months as required.

To ask the Scottish Executive how its annual Scotland Week programme (a) has promoted and (b) continues to promote Scotland’s interests in North America.

Scotland Week 2012, led by the Scottish Government and delivered in partnership with Scottish Development International, VisitScotland and Creative Scotland, took place from 6 to 14 April, with a focus on promoting economic growth for Scotland while leveraging our other key strategic priorities, including the Year of Creative Scotland. Ministerial engagement centred around 6 cities across Canada and the US, with an extensive programme of in excess of 50 engagements, more than half of which were business related.

Between 6 to 13 April I visited New York, San Francisco, Vancouver and Chicago. In total, I participated in 15 business, governmental and cultural meetings, hosted four networking events, including a gala performance of one of two critically acclaimed Scottish plays running in New York City; a dinner for key influencers in Vancouver, and business networking and Year of Creative receptions in Chicago. I gave five interviews to international journalists in New York and Vancouver, and met with four golf and travel journalists in Chicago at an event organised by VisitScotland to promote Ryder Cup 2014. In addition I undertook four media photocalls (three in New York and one in Chicago) to promote Scottish culture, Scottish design and creativity and Scotland as the home of golf.

While in New York I visited Uncommon Charter High School in Brooklyn where I met local students taking part in the National Theatre of Scotland’s (NTS) vibrant international cultural exchange programme. Now in its sixth year, the programme brings together groups of young people to create and perform theatre pieces with support from the NTS professional team. Also in New York I had the pleasure of attending the annual Scotland 10k Run in Central Park which this year attracted some 11,000 competitors. I also helped launch Scotland Re:Designed, an innovative trade exhibition of 12 Scottish fashion and textiles designers supported by the Scottish Government, which saw the designers secure orders worth over £100,000 in Scotland Week alone. During my visit to Chicago I was able to announce that US cloud computing firm enStratus had chosen Edinburgh as the location for its European HQ, bringing 30 new high value jobs to Scotland.

To ask the Scottish Executive what impact Scotland Week 2012 has had on economic opportunities in Canada and the USA.

Scotland Week 2012, led by the Scottish Government and delivered in partnership with Scottish Development International, VisitScotland and Creative Scotland, took place from 6 to 14 April, with a focus on promoting economic growth for Scotland while leveraging our other key strategic priorities, including the Year of Creative Scotland. Ministerial engagement centred around six cities across Canada and the US, with an extensive programme of in excess of 50 engagements, more than half of which were business related. We inducted five new GlobalScots inducted into the network of more than 200 business leaders who serve as ambassadors for Scotland in North America.

My visit, from 8 to 14 April, included 30 engagements and centred on pursuing economic opportunities for Scotland in Houston, Calgary and New York, where the main focus was on promoting Scotland’s key growth sectors, including energy – oil and gas as well as renewables - and financial services. This targeted programme of engagement with key existing and prospective trade and investment partners promoted Scotland as an internationally competitive and innovative business location, and received widespread media coverage.

In Houston and Calgary, I met with representatives of several major energy companies with significant and on-going commitments to realising the economic value of Scotland’s offshore assets. In Houston I hosted a business networking reception for GlobalScots and SDI incubator companies, focussing on the role of internationalisation and its impact on the Scottish economy. In Calgary I hosted business networking events for both GlobalScots and Scottish company representatives based in Alberta, and I had several meetings with companies in the energy sector. In New York, I announced the expansion into the US market of an ambitious Scottish renewables company and addressed an event with senior company representatives and GlobalScots from a variety of industry sectors at the Bloomberg HQ, to promote Scotland as a global centre of excellence for Business Process Outsourcing operations. To promote Scotland in our largest and most valuable international tourism market, I hosted a media event involving creative Scots in New York. During my visit I also took part in six international interviews.
