Questions and answers

Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on progress toward achieving its target of 500 living wage employers.

Earlier this month (during the SNP Conference on 12 March 2016), the First Minister announced that the target of 500 Scots-based living wage accredited employers has been achieved ahead of schedule. This is thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Poverty Alliance team who have worked tirelessly over the last few years to sign up as many employers as possible, and who are now working towards achieving a further target of 1,000 accredited employers by autumn 2017.

These efforts are part of the reason why Scotland has the highest proportion of people paid the living wage outside the South-east of England.

And this is why I am delighted to announce that the Scottish Government will increase our funding to the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative, pledging a further £300,000 to this important project in an effort to ensure as many people, and employers, as possible can benefit from the ‘real’ living wage.

To ask the Scottish Government what youth music initiatives it supports in the Central Scotland region.

The Scottish Government supports a number of youth music initiatives across Central Scotland, many of which are part of the overall Youth Music Initiative (YMI) programme that supports 225,000 children across Scotland and receives annual funding of £10 million. The recent independent evaluation of the YMI indicated that it fosters and develops children's and young people's musical skills and supports more than 300 projects each year in every local authority.

In 2015-16 around £1.1 million has been awarded through YMI School Based Music Making fund to the Central Scotland local authorities of North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and Falkirk.

In 2015-16, £35,615 has been awarded so far through the YMI Access to Music Making fund to support out of school activity in the Central Scotland region.
