Questions and answers

Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

  • Written questions must be answered within 10 working days (20 working days during recess)
  • Other questions such as Topical, Portfolio, General and First Minister's Question Times are taken in the Chamber

To ask the Scottish Government what statute or regulation defines responsibilities towards (a) maintaining, (b) enhancing and (c) preventing the deterioration of the quality of water in the environment; to which statutory body or bodies any responsibility for this falls; who (i) measures and (ii) reports on the quality of water in the environment; whether the quality has been improving or declining; what the explicit and enforceable targets are for enhancing the quality of water in the environment, and (A) to what levels and (B) within what timescales, and what budget it provides for supporting enhancements in water quality.

To ask the Scottish Government whether (a) any statutory requirement exists for Scottish Water, or farmers and other land managers, to reduce the amount of water abstracted from rivers or underground sources, (b) any wider statutory requirement exists to reduce the amount of abstracted water (i) in general and (ii) from sensitive habitats and (c) abstracting water from any source requires consent from SEPA.

To ask the Scottish Government whether its commitment to peatland restoration is tied to the fulfilment of any domestic or international climate action agreements; what its position is on whether its current policy on peatland restoration is in line with the expectations of the Climate Change Committee; what annual budget is allocated to achieve its commitments in relation to peatland restoration, and whether any such budget allocations for peatland restoration have been fully spent in each of the last three years.
