To ask the Scottish Executive whether there are any ICD-9 codes for which there is a target to reduce deaths by 2010 other than those for cancer and heart disease.
Answer
The Scottish Executive Health Department has a target to reduce deaths from cerebrovascular disease by 50% between 1995 and 2010. The ICD-9 codes used for this target are codes 430 - 438. The ICD-10 codes that are used for this target are codes I60 - I69.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether it will recommend that professional training for physiotherapists includes a module on hypermobility syndromes.
Answer
Pre-registration undergraduate training for physiotherapists already prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the effects of hypermobility syndrome.The content of pre-registration courses for physiotherapists is a matter for the professional and regulatory bodies, i.e. the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine.

To ask the Scottish Executive, with reference to the statement by an Executive spokesperson that the number of qualified frontline NHS staff has risen since 1996, as reported on the BBC News website on 27 April 2001, what criteria are used to define staff as frontline; whether any nurses or midwives are not regarded as frontline staff and, if so, what term or terms are used to describe such staff.

Frontline is not a term which is defined.The 27 April statement was based on figures for all qualified nurses and midwives.

To ask the Scottish Executive what the current waiting time is for patients awaiting (a) coronary artery bypass grafts and (b) other cardiac surgery in each health board area.
Answer
The median waiting times for admission to hospital from the inpatient/day case waiting list for coronary artery bypass grafts and other cardiac surgery, in the year ending 31 December 2000, by health board of residence, are given in the table.
Across Scotland, the median waiting time for coronary artery bypass grafts has reduced by 45 days (36%) and the median waiting time for other cardiac surgery has reduced by nine days (10%) compared with the position in the previous year.

Information on the median waiting times for a total hip replacement, by health board area of residence, for the year ending 31 December 2000, is provided in the table.NHSScotland is performing more total hip replacement operations than ever before. Provisional figures show that in the year to 30 September 2000, 4,929 total hip replacement operations were undertaken, an increase of 287(6.2%) on the figure for the year ending 31 March 1997.
