To ask the Scottish Government, regarding the recommendations in the British Academy of Audiology report into NHS Lothian paediatric audiology services, how many children have been recalled for behavioural testing since December 2021.

To ask the Scottish Government, regarding recommendation 36 of the British Academy of Audiology report into NHS Lothian paediatric audiology services, how many children have been identified in each of the five local authorities affected.

A detailed update against each of the BAA recommendations was included in a recent NHS Lothian Board meeting, these can be accessed at NHS Lothian Board Papers 05 April 2023.pdf

NHS Lothian have confirmed that at the time of the BAA audit, the PCHI register had 643 patients recorded. 107 of those were aged greater than 18 years of age. As of 16 May 2023 there are 725 children on the PCHI register. This is a dynamic register adding children when hearing loss is diagnosed, and transitioning young people to adult care when exiting education.

Whilst it is possible for NHS Lothian to identify which local authority children on this register reside, this information is not routinely recorded and NHS Lothian have committed to provide this information which will be shared with the member when it is available.

NHS Lothian advise that behavioural testing is undertaken where part of the agreed clinical pathway. To date 89 children have attended for behavioural testing.

With regards to progress made on reviewing auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing undertaken in the previous five years, and when any report on this will be published. This work has been completed by the BAA with a review of all ABRs of all births back to 2017. The second report from the BAA will be made publicly available in July 2023 when all the reviews are completed.

NHS Lothian have confirmed that 147 children were identified by the BAA for clinical review.

As of 16 May 2023, there are 26 who have had a missed diagnosis, delayed management, or a change to their management since the recall process started. In some cases, the change to management was not as a direct result of the audit in isolation.

31 children have since been recalled by the service following the review of the permanent congenital hearing impairment (PCHI) record.

To ask the Scottish Government, further to the answer to question S6W-15841 by Humza Yousaf, whether it will provide details of the confirmed funding to NHS boards for the purchase of small hot food appliances for all hospital doctors in training, specifically including (a) how much funding has been allocated for this purpose, (b) when the funding will be paid to NHS boards and (c) what guidance or instruction has been issued to NHS boards for the use of such funding.

To ask the Scottish Government how many patients have been removed from NHS waiting lists without receiving treatment since 1 January 2022.

Between 1 January and 31 December 2022, 360,525 new outpatients were removed from NHS waiting lists, for reasons ‘referred back to GP’, ‘transferred’, ‘treatment no longer required’, and ‘other reasons’. Similarly, for inpatients and day cases, 53,585 patients were removed for these reasons. Please see Table 1 for a description of the reasons for removal.

Removal Reason	Description
Referred back to GP	Under Waiting Times guidance, patients can be referred back to their GP for a number of reasons. These include cancelling two previously accepted appointments; failing to attend an appointment without giving notice; failing to respond to an offer of appointment; refusing reasonable offers of appointments; continuing medical or patient advised unavailability; or because the referral to hospital was inappropriate.
Transferred	These are patients whose management has been transferred from one waiting list to another. This can mean a change of specialty, location, or health board. Unless these patients have been transferred outwith NHS Scotland, they should also appear as an addition to the new waiting list and a subsequent removal where appropriate.
Treatment no longer required	This is the number of patients who have been removed from the waiting list because they no longer require treatment.
Other reasons	Other reasons for removal from list comprise of 'Died' and 'inappropriate addition to list'.

Please note that although we refer to the number of 'patients' waiting, individuals may be counted more than once if they are waiting to attend more than one clinic as a new outpatient or more than one treatment as an inpatient or day case, or a combination of outpatient and inpatient or day case care.
