I notice that the natural resources budget has been reduced to £4.5 million this year. What impact will that have?

We heard previously from the UK minister that the Scottish cluster was vital for the UK Government to meet its net zero targets.

Meeting date: 23 January 2024

Good morning, cabinet secretary. I will ask you a couple of questions regarding carbon capture and storage, and it would be remiss of me as a north-easter if I did not take the opportunity to ask you about the Acorn project. Are you able to give the committee an update on the latest developments and on where we are with the Acorn project? I would be interested to hear your views on the impact on the project of the UK Government’s delay in approving it in the first instance—if any.

The Scottish Government has pledged, I think, £80 million for CCS support in Scotland. Can you outline some of the conditions that need to be met before that pledged money is released, or has it already started being released?

Subordinate Legislation

Meeting date: 16 January 2024

Jackie Dunbar

Part of my question has already been answered by the transport minister.

Good morning to you all—sorry, I was being a bit rude.

Regarding the powers allowing local authorities to establish bus companies, you said that some have already started discussions. Why do you think that some have not? Is there a reason for that? What can or will the Scottish Government do to help those that are keen to establish a bus company?

Scottish Biodiversity Strategy (Draft Delivery Plan)

Meeting date: 9 January 2024

Jackie Dunbar

I am gonnae move on to the next question, but I am gonnae be fair and come to Dr Walton first—Paul, if you want to add anything on the first question, please feel free to do so.

The plan highlights the progress that has been made with woodland and peatland restoration programmes, but we know that there are still challenges in meeting targets and spending the committed budgets. What needs to happen in the coming five years to accelerate progress so that we can get things going?

Thank you, convener. Would it be helpful if I asked people to raise their hands if they want to answer?
