The British Sign Language (Scotland) Act was passed in 2015. It aims to promote the use of British Sign Language (BSL) in Scotland.
It led to the development of a BSL national plan and listed authority plans.
The listed authorities that must produce and implement their own plans for promoting and facilitating the use and understanding of BSL include:
The Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee wants to understand if the changes the Act brought into force have improved the lives of BSL users.
The Committee is also keen to find out what changes could be made in both the shorter and longer term to support BSL users.
The Committee is running a call for views in order to inform its inquiry.
It is particularly interested in hearing from BSL users and advocates, as well as the Government and public bodies who are responsible for producing the plans.
People can respond to each question using written text, or can send the Committee a BSL video with their responses.
The call for views closes on 2 May 2025.
