Education, Children and Young People Committee

AI and Education

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is an issue of interest to the Committee. The Committee is keen to understand more the challenges and opportunities it provides to the sector.

The Committee's work on education reform has given it a chance to explore some of the issues with education experts.

The Committee held an evidence session on AI in December 2023. This session focused on Scotland's Futures Forum events on AI in education held in June 2023 and November 2023.

It covered:

  • the potential risks related to AI use in education
  • the opportunities AI may present in education
  • how AI may affect the goals or outcomes of education
  • the risks that AI might exacerbate inequality
  • AI and policymaking

After the session, the Committee wrote to the Cabinet for Education and Skills on issues raised during discussion.
