Thursday 8 September
All business at the Scottish Parliament is suspended until further notice and Holyrood’s flags fly at half-mast as a mark of respect.
On behalf of the Parliament, Presiding Officer Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP expresses her deep sorrow at the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
Friday 9 September
A book of condolence is opened at the Parliament for Members, staff and all who work at Holyrood to convey their respects. The Presiding Officer is first to sign the book that will be presented to His Majesty.
Saturday 10 September
The Presiding Officer attends the Accession Council in London, at which His Majesty is formally proclaimed King. It is announced that the Scottish Parliament will meet on 12 September, in the presence of the King, for a Motion of Condolence to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen.
Monday 12 September
At 12 noon, the Proclamation of the Accession of His Majesty The King is made at the Mercat Cross, on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
The Queen’s cortege leaves the Palace of Holyroodhouse, passes the Scottish Parliament and makes its way to St Giles' Cathedral, for a service of prayer and reflection.
After the service, the Presiding Officer attends a private audience with the King in the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP says she looks forward to the “continued close relationship between the Parliament and the Monarch”.
Later that afternoon, the King arrives at the Scottish Parliament to hear a Motion of Condolence to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
On arrival, the King is introduced to party leaders in Holyrood’s Garden Lobby.
Holyrood gives thanks, as a nation and a Parliament, for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and for her extraordinary life and work.

Tuesday 13 September
Following a prayer service at St Giles' Cathedral, the Presiding Officer and First Minister proceed to Edinburgh airport. Her Majesty The Queen departs Scotland for the last time.
Wednesday 14 September
Along with fellow Members of the Scottish Parliament, the Presiding Officer attends a service in Westminster Hall for the Commencement of Lying-in-State of Her Majesty The Queen. Ms Johnstone says “It was a privilege to pay our respects to The Queen. A very moving moment in history.”
Monday 19 September
The Presiding Officer represents the Scottish Parliament at the State Funeral of Her Majesty The Queen at Westminster Abbey. The First Minister of Scotland, the Rt Hon Nicola Sturgeon MSP, represents the Scottish Government. The leaders of Scotland’s political parties represented in the Parliament also attend.
The Presiding Officer says she was “honoured” to represent the Parliament and that the State Funeral was a “fitting tribute to Her Majesty and a poignant farewell”.
Tuesday 20 September
Following the period of national mourning, the Parliament starts its Chamber business with tributes to Her Late Majesty The Queen, with contributions from a number of MSPs.
